FEIN

Many basic operations for business owners require a federal employer identification number or FEIN. This number is unique to each business and can be used to file business taxes and avoid tax penalties, open a business bank account, establish credit for your business, and prevent identity theft, among other purposes. FEIN numbers are free to obtain from the IRS.

SAM

SAM stands for the Systems for Award Management. Businesses can obtain a SAM number free of charge from the General Services Administration, however, the usual waiting period after filing your application can take several weeks. Businesses wishing to apply for federal grants, contracts, and most purchasing agreements must have a SAM number.

DBE

Disadvantaged Business Enterprise Program (BEP/VBP) are administered by the State of Illinois through the Department of Transportation, or IDOT. It is free of charge to register in the program, but is limited to businesses owned by minorities, women, persons with disabilities, and veterans of the armed services. IDOT offers complimentary DBE Supportive Services certification consultants to assist you with completion of your application. Business certified as a DBE can apply for recognition certification with other agencies, including CMS BEP Certification.
